Postpartum Doula
Services

What is a Postpartum Doula?

A Postpartum Doula is a nurturing individual who supports families, in their homes, for the first few months after the birth of their babies. We usually come for 3-4 hours at a time, either daily for a while or a few days a week. We care for all members of the new family and pass along a wealth of evidence based information, setting up the new family for success in their parenting journey. We are trained in the areas of:

  • Physical and emotional support of the new mother and family

  • Demonstration of techniques for all aspects of baby care

  • Comfort measures for the mother after birth

  • Feeding support

  • Sibling care

  • Postpartum mood disorder awareness and information

  • Referral to community resources

  • General tidying

  • Baby laundry

  • Food preparation

Why get a Postpartum Doula?

Most traditional societies observe a period, often of about 30 days where the new mother and her home are looked after, so that she can heal her postpartum body and spend her time learning about and nurturing her new baby. During this time the new family is surrounded by family who have a great deal of experience and wisdom to share. Today’s fast paced lifestyles often don’t allow for observing this special time period. Often new families do not live near friends and family who would traditionally support them. For these reasons Postpartum doulas have been gaining popularity in recent years and families have been reaping the benefits. Research shows that families who feel they have been well supported and cared for during the early postpartum period are more successful at adapting to their new lives. They have:

  • Greater breastfeeding success

  • Greater self-confidence as a new parent

  • Less postpartum depression

  • Lower incidence of abuse in the household

The postpartum Doula fills the gaps that have been created by the 21st century way of life. A caring and knowledgeable support person who comes by regularly to encourage and equip new parents in the ways they need so they can feel confident in their new roles!
